Mark Zuckerberg & 15 Other Billionaires to Give Away Fortunes

The billionaire founder of social network Facebook Inc. has agreed to give the majority of his wealth to charity, part of a broader group of rich entrepreneurs committing to philanthropy earlier in their lives.

Mark Zuckerberg has signed onto the “Giving Pledge,” which asks its signatories to commit publicly to give away the majority of their wealth. The 26-year-old is one of 16 billionaires new to the pledge, which now totals more than 50 donors. New names include AOL co-founder Steve Case, investor Carl Icahn and former junk-bond king Michael Milken.

They join existing pledges made by wealthy individuals and families including Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison, film director George Lucas and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

China counters Nobel with Confucius Prize

China on Thursday awarded a newly created “peace prize” to a man who had no intention of accepting it one day before a Chinese professor was to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for trying to bring democracy to the communist dictatorship.

The awarding of the Confucius Peace Prize comes amid a campaign by China to vilify the dissident who was awarded the Nobel and delegitimize the Norwegian prize itself. Dissident Liu Xiaobo, a literary critic imprisoned in a Chinese jail, will not be allowed to appear in Oslo today to accept the Nobel.

Westboro Baptist Church to Protest Elizabeth Edwards Funeral

Westboro Baptist Church, famous for protesting against gays and picketing at military funerals, has stated it plans to hold a protest at the public memorial of Elizabeth Edwards on Saturday. The service will be held at the Edenton Street United Methodist Church and begins at 1 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.

USA Today reports the church plans on protesting for 90 minutes before the memorial starts. Edwards passed away Tuesday after a long battle with cancer in her home in Chapel Hill. Edwards was a supporter of gay marriage after a speech she gave in San Francisco in 2007.

The PlayStation Phone

It’s hard to believe that what we’re looking at is real — but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you’ve long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform.

Oops, Olivia Wilde Didn’t Want To Be Sexy In ‘Tron’

Olivia Wilde may have totally botched her role in Tron in her opinion…she wasn’t trying to be sexy at all! The former model and House actress actually meant the character to come off as a kind of androgynous Joan of Arc. Um…ooooookay.

The Cost of Higher Edumacation

Here’s what I posit to you today: did you pursue further learning, did you find a job in your chosen field and how much are you into The Man for in order to pay for it? Also, was it worth it?

November 22, 2010 is a date that will go down in history for my wife and I. There’s nothing particularly spectacular about today as far as the rest of the world is concerned but, for we two heads of the household, it is a day that will be marked by joyous celebration and possibly several unnatural and lewd acts. You see, today is the day that Mrs. Scott’s student loans are finally paid. We’ve been married for eleven and one half years and those loans have been floating ominously for longer than we’ve been a legalized union according to the government.

I must admit that I get a little bit giddy when I think of what wondrous and frivolous things we could spend this newly liberated chunk of revenue on, then I remember that we have three children, a big-ass mortgage and haven’t really been able to save anything due to fiscal constraints. I suppose that now we’ll get to start saving for the future and, while necessary, it isn’t nearly as exciting as hanging a new 60” LCD television on the wall in my study (I don’t actually have a study but it makes me sound smart and sophisticated).
