Open WiFi Owner Not Liable For Illegal File-Sharing

In 2010, anti-piracy group CIAPC obtained the identity of a local woman and sued her for copyright infringement. They claimed that she had used Direct Connect to infringe the rights of their entertainment industry members. Pay us 6,000 euros to make the case go away, they told her, or things will get much worse.

But instead of caving in the woman kicked back. The offense, which allegedly took place in a 12 minute time period on July 14th 2010, coincided with an event at the woman’s home attended by 100 people. Any one of them could have fired up a laptop, accessed the open WiFi, and been tracked by CIAPC.

Why Loud Music in Bars Increases Alcohol Consumption

Lowering the lights signals the real beginning of night-time fun: with dimmed lights and alcohol beginning to work its magic the business of loosening up after the day’s exertions can truly begin.

But turning the music up so loud that people are forced to shout at each other doesn’t have quite the same beneficial effect on social interactions. Because everyone is shouting, the bar becomes even noisier and soon people start to give up trying to communicate and focus on their drinking, meaning more trips to the bar, and more regrets in the morning.

Gaming for Good

Between May 26th – 27th four players and a dozen volunteers will converge on Kwartzlab to play a 24 hour marathon game of Borderlands in support of Child’s Play, a charity that donates over 2 million dollars to Children’s Hospitals worldwide every year.

The event, called Headshots from the Heart, is a video-gaming marathon broadcast live on the internet from the heart of Waterloo Region. The players will combat eye strain, exhaustion, and carpel tunnel syndrome in an effort to raise money by accumulating as many headshots during a play through of the game as possible, with pledges from audience members.

Borderlands is a cooperative first-person shooter role-playing game developed by Gearbox Software for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360,Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Borderlands brings together four treasure hunters for a fast-paced adventure across Pandora, an untamed world filled with faction warfare and dangerous wildlife. Guided by a mysterious angel and assisted along the way by a helpful robot, the players seek to loot the treasures of the vault, though no one knows its true secret.

The marathon will be broadcast online in real time, and the audience is invited to participate by answering trivia questions, bidding on donated prizes, making special requests of the players and hosts, creating in-game challenges, and asking questions of the interviewees.
