“When someone sees a dog skateboarding, they go, ‘Wow, that was awesome!’ ” says the dogs’ owner and trainer, Omar Von Muller, 49, a Colombian native of part-German heritage, with intense dark eyes, craggily handsome features and a ball cap. “But they don’t realize the hundreds of hours I put into that. And in those hundreds of hours this dog got a lot of exercise, a lot of play, a lot of things that he really likes to do. ”
While today’s skateboarding session is just for fun, and offers tourists and beach walkers a sensational free show, Von Muller used to take his show to the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, where an hour and a half would yield $350 cash.

The 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid is estimated to get a solid 40 mpg on the highway. But a team of “hypermiling” specialists—who utilize special driving techniques to boost a vehicle’s fuel economy—just finished a trip through every Lower 48 state while averaging 64.55 miles per gallon. They broke a Guinness World Record in the process.
Wayne Gerdes, of Illinois, and New York’s Chris Bernius teamed up to complete a 14-day, 7,899-mile drive that touched each of the contiguous 48 states—and that, most impressively, required just 5.5 fill-ups at the pump. Throughout their journey, in a standard-issue 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid, the drivers averaged 64.55 mpg, and 1,418 miles on the road before having to refill the tank.

Meet Christopher Anspach. The Iowa man, 28, was sentenced Wednesday to 10 days in jail for failing to return books and other items he checked out earlier this year from the local library.
When Anspach, pictured in the mug shot at right, did not respond to repeated attempts to contact him via telephone and certified mail, Newton Public Library officials turned the matter over to police and the city attorney, according to District Court records.
Anspach pleaded guilty August 31 to a misdemeanor theft count in connection with his failure to return 27 separate items (books and other media) that library brass valued at $770.67. Along with being ordered to pay restitution to the library, Anspach was fined $625.
Anspach, a Pizza Hut employee, is currently serving his sentence at the Jasper County jail.
