Voyager 1 Spacecraft Nears the Edge of the Solar System

Voyager 1, an unmanned probe that NASA launched into space in 1977 to study the outer planets in our solar system, is still doing remarkable things 30 years after it photographed Jupiter and Saturn. According to a Voyager Project scientist, new data from the probe indicate that it is nearing the boundaries of interstellar space, the space between stars where matter becomes even more sparse.

The pivotal moment in Voyager 1’s journey outside of our solar system is still to come, however; within about five years’ time, it is expected to cross over into the heliopause, the ‘official‘ edge of the solar system.

Tech Support Care Package – For your parents

Every December, millions of tech-savvy young people descend on their homes only to arrive to a long list of tech support issues that their parents need help with. A few of us at Google thought there had to be a better way that would save us all a few hours each December…

The result of our brainstorm was TeachParentsTech.org, a site that allows you to select any number of simple tech support videos to send to mom, dad or uncle Vinnie. The site is not perfect and hardly covers all the tech support questions you may be asked, but hopefully it’s a start!

Brett Favre’s start streak stops at 297

An historic era in NFL annals ended on Monday as Brett Favre was left out of the starting lineup for the first time since 1992.

Favre, dealing with effects of a shoulder strain suffered on Dec. 5, saw his NFL-record streak of 297 straight regular-season starts end in the Minnesota Vikings’ game against the New York Giants in Detroit.

The Vikings put Favre on the inactive list for Monday’s game. Tarvaris Jackson, who led the Vikings to a 38-14 win in Week 13 after Favre was injured on the opening drive, replaced Favre as the team’s starter.

President Obama’s health care law ruled unconstitutional

A federal judge declared the foundation of President Barack Obama’s health care law unconstitutional Monday, ruling that the government cannot require Americans to purchase insurance. The case is expected to end up at the Supreme Court.

In his order, U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson said he will allow the law to remain in effect while appeals are heard, meaning there is unlikely to be any immediate impact on other provisions that have already taken effect. The insurance coverage mandate is not scheduled to begin until 2014.
