Six Scottish windfarms were paid up to £300,000 to stop producing energy, it has emerged. The turbines, at a range of sites across Scotland, were stopped because the grid network could not absorb all the energy they generated.
Details of the payments emerged following research by the Renewable Energy Foundation (REF). The REF said energy companies were paid £900,000 to halt the turbines for several hours between 5 and 6 April.
At the age of 21, the British physicist Stephen Hawking was found to have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease. While A.L.S. is usually fatal within five years, Dr. Hawking lived on and flourished, producing some of the most important cosmological research of his time.
In the 1960s, with Sir Roger Penrose, he used mathematics to explicate the properties of black holes. In 1973, he applied Einstein’s general theory of relativity to the principles of quantum mechanics. And he showed that black holes were not completely black but could leak radiation and eventually explode and disappear, a finding that is still reverberating through physics and cosmology.

Let’s turn back the clock a bit. It’s a hot day in 1886 and you’re sitting on the back porch of your great-great-great grandfather’s homestead as he talks about how some fellas up in New York are erecting a huge statue of a lady called the Statue of Liberty and then trails off into a long-winded diatribe about Grover Clevland’s economic policies.
Suddenly the screen door slams and your great-great-great grandmother emerges from the kitchen holding two sweaty glass bottles of dark brown liquid fresh from the ice box labeled as John Pemberton’s Coca-Cola.
Braben has developed a tiny USB stick PC that has a HDMI port in one end and a USB port on the other. You plug it into a HDMI socket and then connect a keyboard via the USB port giving you a fully functioning machine running a version of Linux. The cost? $25.
The hardware being offered is no slouch either. It uses a 700MHz ARM11 processor coupled with 128MB of RAM and runs OpenGL ES 2.0 allowing for decent graphics performance with 1080p output confirmed. Storage is catered for by an SD card slot. It also looks as though modules can be attached such as the 12MP camera seen in the image above.
