Marijuana – The Big Picture

With marijuana on the ballot in four U.S. states this November, most prominently California’s Proposition 19, which would fully legalize the substance, the legalization of marijuana has become a hot topic of discussion in North America. If pot were to become legal in California, it is unclear how that would affect the ongoing drug wars in neighboring Mexico – whether it would increase, decrease, or have little effect on the widespread violence.

What is clear is that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has declared that the federal Justice Department will continue to prosecute those who use or distribute recreational marijuana, regardless of any change to state law. Collected here are photos from the past year of marijuana in the news, for both medicinal and recreational purposes, and some of the legal entanglements involved.

Even as she was being taken to jail, deputies say she continued to tell the deputy he was going to be in serious trouble for arresting her.

If this isn’t headline of the day, I don’t know what is.

CANADA’S Research In Motion has fired back at Apple’s Steve Jobs over his claims that the iPhone is outselling the Blackberry and that 7-inch tablet computers have no future. “We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple,” RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said in a blog post responding to the comments made on Monday by Jobs.

Bholaram Das had his birthday last week – and to mark the occasion enrolled on a PhD course in north-east Assam state. “If my son can get a PhD at the age of 55, why can’t I do it at 100?” said Mr Das, possibly India’s oldest student. He was imprisoned for opposing British rule in 1930 and went on to work as a teacher, lawyer and judge in Assam before retiring in 1971.
