The island had not much fertile land, not much water – but it was strategically situated between Asia, Africa and Europe, and the Therans made ”beyond the horizon’’ their business. One wall painting, the Marine Frieze, shows a newly invented kind of sailing ship breaking into uncharted waters. Around the edge are lions, date palms, and African antelope. This was a culture that interacted with the outside world. Thera would have been a legend in its own lifetime.
The apocalypse that destroyed it could not possibly have escaped the human radar. It would have become a story passed down the generations. I believe we find ghostly memories of it in one of the most famous myths of all, Plato’s account of the lost city of Atlantis; ”Listen to a tale which, though strange, is wholly true… these histories tell of a mighty power… that was swallowed up… in the span of one day and night… by the sea… and vanished.’’

Most weight-loss drugs help burn fat by speeding up metabolism, suppressing appetite, or both. But a new drug currently being tested on obese rhesus monkeys goes a step further: It reportedly “kills” fat cells. Researchers at the University of Texas think the drug could one day help fight obesity in humans.

Once again Gursky makes bank with a picture which could have been taken by just about anyone. Unlike one of his truly interesting and talented pieces such as Chicago Board of Trade, Rhein II features some grass and then some water and then some more grass. Perhaps the effect is lost when looking at the image on a computer as opposed to it’s six foot tall physical form. Gursky’s print was just sold for $4,338,500 at auction, making it the most expensive photograph ever sold.

McDonalds’ McRib and its cult-like following are back. Thank goodness the “disconcerting” sandwich is only returning for a limited time only, says Meredith Melnick at TIME. Because if you knew about all the unpronounceable ingredients packed into the McRib, you might think twice about wolfing down the sauce-drenched pork concoction. Think you can stomach what’s inside?

I know the guy in the next cubicle is an asshat, you know the guy in the next cubicle is an asshat…but what can we do about it? Microsoft to the rescue! The company is developing software that detects asshattery in the workplace, assigns the employee a score and reports them.
A method to be executed at least in part in a computing device for monitoring, analyzing, and influencing organizational behavior, the method comprising: determining desired and undesired behaviors; determining an organizational context; identifying actions associated with the desired and undesired behaviors within the organizational context; monitoring communication sessions of at least one modality to detect identified actions; analyzing detected actions; and providing analysis results such that desired behaviors are encouraged and undesired behaviors are discouraged.
