End of the World Postponed
It’s a good news/bad news situation for believers in the 2012 Mayan apocalypse. The good news is that the Mayan “Long Count” calendar may not end on Dec. 21, 2012 (and, by extension, the world may not end along with it). The bad news for prophecy believers? If the calendar doesn’t end in December 2012, no one knows when it actually will – or if it has already.
Marijuana – The Big Picture
With marijuana on the ballot in four U.S. states this November, most prominently California’s Proposition 19, which would fully legalize the substance, the legalization of marijuana has become a hot topic of discussion in North America. If pot were to become legal in California, it is unclear how that would affect the ongoing drug wars in neighboring Mexico – whether it would increase, decrease, or have little effect on the widespread violence.
What is clear is that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has declared that the federal Justice Department will continue to prosecute those who use or distribute recreational marijuana, regardless of any change to state law. Collected here are photos from the past year of marijuana in the news, for both medicinal and recreational purposes, and some of the legal entanglements involved.
$2 million gold and jewel-encrusted Monopoly Set
Museum of American Finance President David Cowen and renowned San Francisco-based jewelry designer Sidney Mobell have lately unveiled a Monopoly game set made out of solid gold and encrusted with jewels. Luxurious attention has been paid to every detail. The set of dice alone is worth $10,000, with 42 full-cut diamonds for the number dots. All of the properties that make up the game board are also done in gems, with a total of 165 gemstones. The “Chance” and “Community Chest” cards have been photo-etched. The 18-karat gold jeweled Monopoly set is expected to be worth roughly $2 million.
