An important message from the Ohio University Division of Sanitation

“At Ohio University, what we lack in proper sanitation, we make up for in honesty.” The only thing this sign is lacking is a cartoon man touching the door handle and contracting hepatitis.

Priest Gets PhD in Snowboarding

An Anglican priest from Trail, B.C., has become the first person in the world to get a PhD in snowboarding.

Neil Elliot, the minister at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, recently received his doctorate from Kingston University in London, England.

“The genesis was discovering this term ‘soul-riding’ in a discussion on the internet, and that discussion going into how people have had transcending experiences while riding and discovering I’ve had that experience as well I just hadn’t recognized it,” he said.

Photos: Snow monsters of Japan

Ghostly trees covered in snow and rime ice — known as “snow monsters” or juhyou (frost-covered trees) in Japanese — are a celebrated feature of the winter landscape in mountainous areas of northern Japan. Here are a few photos.

Sign him up! Fan catches bat, Saves beer

Three things impress me about this photo.

One, photographer David Goldman got this shot. Think about it: Goldman’s lens was most likely focused on the playing field, not on the stands to his back. He had to swing his camera to where the bat might land, get it in focus and get the correct exposure. Luckily the bat landed in the same sunny spot as the playing field, so he didn’t need to change the exposure.

Two, Goldman got the guy’s name. He left his photo position on the field to ask the fan his name, how to spell it and where he’s from.

Three, the fan, Mitch Davie, caught the bat with one hand. And he didn’t spill his Red Stripe.
