Human landscapes in SW Florida – Big Picture

A couple weeks ago, I was listening to a story by NPR’s Planet Money team about “Toxie” a toxic asset they had purchased to follow and help tell the story of the recent financial meltdown.

One of the mortgages in Toxie was on a home bought for investment in Bradenton, Florida, and the team took a look at housing in the area. Many homes there are empty and have been for years. Huge developments sit partially completed among densely built up neighborhoods and swampland. A guest stated that there were “enough housing lots in Charlotte County to last for more than 100 years”.

Tablet Sales Forecast to Hit 20 Million This Year

Research firm Gartner estimates the worldwide sales of tablets this year will reach nearly 20 million units; next year they estimate the number to almost triple. Is this the end of netbooks?

“Mini notebooks will suffer from the strongest cannibalization threat as media tablet average selling prices drop below $300 over the next 2 years,” says Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.

US & Canada Have Priciest Cell Phone Plans

Users here in the US&Canada have to pay at least $59.99 for a complete cell phone package, with Canada coming in at #1 costing US$67.50. While India and Honk Kong came in with the cheapest complete plans: $12.90 and $13.50.

The foundation examined the different types of mobile packages in various countries in order to determine the minimum cost for voice minutes, texting, and data, and found that—surprise!—countries with more competition and more regulation tended to have the best pricing.
